Having just written a rather lengthy text-rich post I realise now how useful a tablet PC would be. I’ve always thought touch screen and tablets to be somewhat of a gimmick in terms of practical day-to-day usage, I’m a firm believer in the pen and paper method of writing quick notes and diagrams. Why bother doing it on a laptop, especially if you’re going to use text recognition to turn it into type?
However the problem comes when you want to actually show other people your pen and paper scribblings, such as when writing a blog. I could have conveyed much of the previous post more elequently by drawing diagrams. But the trouble of having to take a picture of a diagram and upload it, or upload it using a scanner, is somewhat far to go for a blog that few people probably read!
So that’s exactly where a tablet would come in handy, I would much rather that than use some diagram software which is inevitably more time consuming and probably would end up less meaningful than the form of physical expression that is writing and drawing by hand. I would definitely consider investing in a tablet if I worked remotely in any form. Especially when it comes to software development I’m all for making notes and drawing diagrams, they speak for themselves in a line of work littered with confusing jargon and acronyms. Boxes, labels, arrows… sorted!
